12 quid a month for 12 months…

You could spend it on a take away once a month, or maybe buy a round of drinks, or the odd latte here and there. Or you could help kick start a new charity.

Over the last 12 months we have piloted awareness campaigns and recovery groups, provided training and resources for leaders and churches, helped start a new national conference called porn scars and launched various prayer initiatives. But we believe it’s time to take the project to another level.

Naked Truth is starting the process of becoming a registered charity and we need your help.

We need to raise close to £100,000 for the next year. As you can imagine there are not many grants or pots of money set up to fund a project like Naked Truth. So We are going to be depending on the generous gift of hundreds of individuals.

Therefore we have launched the 12 for 12 campaign.

Will you commit to give £12 for 12 months to get us started? If you want to give more or give longer then we would love that. But many of us could sign up for £12 for 12. Think of it like a year’s subscription to opening eyes and freeing lives from the damaging impact of porn.

When we say 12 for 12, we mean it. We promise we won’t keep mithering, bugging or asking you for more money. You will get ONE email at the end of the 12 months asking if you want to continue giving, if you don’t no problem. We are just really grateful for the kick start.

Its not complicated, I’ve got small kids, so I don’t leave the front door wide open. When I have teenagers I won’t leave them alone with a drug dealer who wants to get them hooked. We know porn can be harmful and addictive but so many households have little, if any, protection in place. So how can you put the chain on the door of the internet and decide who/what comes into your house?

GET AWARE

Here are a few sites that are set up to help parents, carers, teachers, youth workers etc get more information about how young people are using the internet and what action to take.

Childnet International: an informative site that aims to give help for non techy people click here

Commonsense media: includes apps suggestions & parent focused film reviews click here

GET FILTERS

Most computers/sky & cable boxes have parental controls. These can accessed for FREE and are particularly effective if you have younger kids.

If you have an Apple computer click here

If you use a PC/Microsoft click here

If you use internet explorer you can use content advisor

Google also has a safe search feature.Which should help stop inappropriate images appearing in image searches. Simply type in www.google.com/preferences and set filter and click SAVE.

Filters at the router (the box that provides your wireless)

OPENDNS is a website that enables you to filter content at the router. This means that all the mobile devices and phones using your wireless network will automatically get filtered. The downside is this is a bit more technical to set up (although the website has very simple instructions to follow) and sadly doesn’t work for every router (virgin media’s super hubs don’t work for example). It is free and very effective. If you have the right router and if you can get a techy mate to help, if needed, this is a great service. CLICK HERE

It’s worth checking with your internet provider to see what they offer (eg talk talk offer free filtering). Also contact your mobile providers. click here for information on what various mobile providers offer.

COVENANT EYES or SAFE EYES both provide family protection for desktops and mobile devices. These are not free but do provide a lot of options and support.

GET TALKING

Of course having a filter doesn’t mean “it’s all sorted”, particularly if you have teenagers.Here is some information to help you get talking to young people, asking the right questions and setting some good boundaries.

NEXT ONLINE PRAYER EVENT

Back in November we held our first LIVE online prayer event.

If you read some of the older posts on this blog (click here) you will know the event was a bit of an “accident” because the venue for the original november prayer meeting cancelled our booking. With a little frustration and with little time we came up with the idea of having the event live on the internet. After all when the world biggest pornsite gets 4.4 billion page views A MONTH- it’s clear that internet is the “place” where porn thrives. So lets bring our prayers to that “place” and pray online.

So, on the evening of the event people logged on to a facebook group and posted their prayers. For some the prayers were filmed on iphones and posted, other wrote text, others posted pictures. For over an hour prayers were constantly being posted, replied too and ‘liked’. You can see the prayers people wrote here

We really felt it was a powerful time and so we are going to do it again.

The next event will be April 25th at 8pm.

ONLINE PRAYER EVENT

Throughout scripture God’s people are often found doing something prophetically and physically that in many ways looked a bit wacky (marching around walls for example) but often these prophetic acts seemed to have spiritual significance. It shifted something. In a similar way, we want one of the key elements of naked truth prayer events to be seeking to prophetically DO something expecting that will shift things spiritually.

LIVE ONLINE PRAYER EVENT

You might of done some prayer walking in your time. You know the kind of thing, praying that God will change and transform the areas where you walk. Praying on the very ground you want to see change. But how do you do that when it comes to the porn industry, when most of the “ground” where porn has its power is online? Well, we thought we would prophetically take our prayers to the “ground” where we long to see change and have an “online prayer event”

Like most prayer events we will gather to pray. But we will gather online with a bit of help from Twitter and Facebook.

Three ways to pray online

a) Written prayer- instead of saying your prayers we want you to write and post them (we will tell you how)

b) Pictures- we would love people to take a photo (maybe from the highest place you can get to that day) and post a prayer with it. Maybe you want to take a picture of your own computer and dedicate it to God. Do whatever you can think of. Prayer is so much more than words! Be visual with your prayer. Afterall what we are praying about is mostly visual.

c) Videos-throughout the night I will post videos of some my prayers, why not join in and post a video of one of your prayers. it’s not about production values or being word perfect it’s just a way to get your prayer online.

So, here is where facebook and twitter come in and help us join together in prayer in an online prayer event.

We’ve had a set back but we’re not going to stop praying! Here’s whats happened…

Unfortunately, and to be honest, rather frustratingly we are going to have to change our plans for the prayer event on the 22nd. We had booked and paid to use floor24 of city tower but sadly the venue have recently told us that they are now unable to host the event. We are currently scouting out alternative venues for an future date but unfortunately we have had to make the decision to postpone the event until the new year.

When planning this event, our intention was to be as physically high up as we could get. Partly because having a great view of the manchester skyline would be an inspiring catalyst as we prayed for our cities, but it was also intended as a prophetic statement based on proverbs 9, where both wisdom and folly make an invitation from the highest place in the city.

help us bring guerrilla to the city

In November we go public with our first guerrilla art campaign.

In previous posts we have explained how NAKED TRUTH will use street art and installations, short, edgy films, spoof billboards and other creative ideas to point and question the accepted norms around porn. Our aim is that this will amuse, provoke reactions and nudge people towards unique websites that will further inform and challenge them. November sees the first of these campaigns being unleashed in Manchester and we want you to help us out.

So whats the big deal with Guerrillas?

Wikipedia says “Guerrilla marketing is an advertising strategy in which low-cost unconventional means (graffiti, sticker bombing, flash mobs) are utilized, often in a localized fashion or large network of individual cells, to convey or promote a product or an idea

The concept of guerrilla marketing was invented as an unconventional system of promotions that relies on time, energy and imagination rather than a big marketing budget. Typically, guerrilla marketing campaigns are unexpected and unconventional, potentially interactive, and consumers are targeted in unexpected places.
The objective of guerrilla marketing is to create a unique, engaging and thought-provoking concept to generate buzz, and consequently turn viral.”

One evening in November we will be taking our first campaign to the streets. This involves distribution of posters and stickers (and a few other secret ideas). Journalists investigate impact of porn

Since we started Naked truth, at times it has been painfully clear that talking about the negative impact of porn is a taboo subject in both churches and wider culture. However, it seems like the media are investigating the effects of porn more than ever at the moment. Is God up to something? Could this be part of the answer to our prayers?

In October, BBC Radio 1′s Newsbeat broke a story that porn websites are stealing private photos from social networking pages, including some images of children.

It raised the frightening spectre of people as young as 13 producing sexually explicit images and video of themselves – which are then being pirated for profit.

The next day, Newsbeat reported new survey findings that porn is having a detrimental effect on the sex lives of over a third 16-24 year olds.

They spoke to a Relate counsellor who confirmed that the relationship advice charity is dealing with more requests for help because of online porn.

The day after that, the BBC ran a piece on their BBC News Magazine site asking ‘Should children be taught that porn is not real?’ Their report included a shocking statistic from YouGov that claims almost a third of 16-18-year-olds look at sexual pictures on mobile phones at least a few times a month – at school.

The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) is calling for children to be taught about porn as part of the national curriculum for the first time, because there is a danger that porn will become what one campaigner describes as ‘the default sex education’.

But the most shocking thing we’ve come across in the mainstream media over the last couple of months is a feature article in the Times Education Supplement, the leading newspaper for the teaching profession.

PHSE teacher Chloe Combi reports on highly disturbing trends she’s noticed while working with teens, suggesting that the easy accessibility of online porn is warping the way young people view their bodies and poisoning their emerging sexuality. There is unprecedented pressure to have sex, and sexting and phone-porn bullying is becoming more common in schools.

‘Just as teenagers will wear the fashions and drink the drinks they are bombarded with images of, or try the substances their favourite celebrity is dabbling in, they are going to copy the porn images they see several times a day. Parental control locks on family computers are pointless: the kids have smartphones.’

Beware, it’s not an easy read but if nothing else, it’s sure to get you praying for God to move.

It’s exciting to hear the stories about people who, since we launched Naked Truth a few months ago, have begun to walk in freedom from porn.

One friend of Naked Truth has started to blog about his journey and has invited us to share the link.

This is what he says: ‘After many years of thinking I would always have a problem with porn, this year, 2012, I began a journey into what finally feels like real freedom. I am sharing my story in the hope it might give strength to others who long to walk out of the prison of porn…’
